glutes and upper thigh work
by: Raul Alberto

I do find it interesting that someone would find it hard to get these places addressed in a professional massage setting. I do not see the issue so long as draping, communication of the techniques and intent and permission of the client to work on these areas abound.

I work a lot on the lower back, up to and including some if not all the glutes, and upper thighs in a clinical massage setting. I do trigger point therapy, decongestion, myofascial release, all of which address muscle/connective tissue disfunction, target referred pain, and improve function and mobility of the muscles, regardless if that is gluteus maximus, or levator scapula.

Then again, i work confidently and professionally, always talking with the patient and letting them know what im doing, even if it is a simple stretch techique and keep them engaged in the healing process. So, that is probably what helps me. Just my two cents on the matter.

Re: inner legs and gluts worked

As a trained Neuromuscular therapist, I almost always treated the gluts and the inner thighs. There gluts are number one on my list when a client describes lower back pain, hip pain or "siatica". The inner thigh or adductors also can play a large role in the same pain patterns.

I believe why so many therapists avoid these areas is because of a possible misunderstanding between the client and the practictioner. I always explain the muscles I'm specifically working and how they can cause the pain pattern the client is having.

Also, I believe that many therapists may feel that these areas need to be addressed, but the facility they are working for forbid it due to legal considerations.

My suggestion would be to find an independent therapist and explain that you are looking for a nonsexual/therapeutic massage and prefer to have the gluts and adductors treated during your session.
