Stunned and Shaken
Hello.......
Well I suppose it was only a matter of time based on shear numbers but I still find myself shocked and in disbelief. For the past 20 plus years I have been a Massage Therapist in some capacity. In the beginning I worked on a freelance basis, worked for chiros and acupuncturists, in salons, etc etc. I have burned out several times and found myself with a career for a major airline which lasted a decade before being laid off about 3 years ago. So it's back to "full-time" massage and another go around the block.
Well some things have changed while others haven't. While trying to build a private practice again I work on a part-time basis at a franchised massage business. Not my idea of utopia but it helps to pay the bills. Well, 2 years and about 1200 massages later my manager shows me an anonymous letter addressed to the business. In it is a brief statement from a client saying that after debating with herself long and hard she felt compelled to send the letter.
It states that she was "very uncomfortable" and "made to feel violated" during the massage. The note goes on to say that my "actions were innapropriate" and that she felt the owner should know about it.
As stated before I have been a therapist for over 20 years even practicing while having other careers. In my estimation I have probably given between 10 to 12 thousand treatments in my life with or without pay. NEVER have I been accused of ANY wrong doing. There is a good reason for this. It's because I have never done anything wrong.
There are all kinds of people out there and some of them are looking for trouble and will create it when there is none to be found. For whatever reason this person has chosen me to exorcise her demons.
My question is this....What are my recourses should this anonymous individual decide to confront the owner/manager at some later date as it suits her fancy? I am guilty of nothing and feel this a matter of libel possibly becoming slander although I know little about the law. I just read on line about a male therapist in Boulder, Co. that was wrongly accused of sexual misconduct
and was ARRESTED only to have the charges against him dropped at a later date. This has me shaking in my shoes because I realize that currently in this country you are guilty until proven innocent.
